Celebrate India's '1st Paper Day'... Embrace literacy,  Health and Hygiene

“Paper” is a unique product which is produced from a sustainable source ie wood which is cultivated in arid lands by farmers. It is not only bio degradable but also 100% recyclable without much impact on the environment.  Paper is the primary medium is spreading Literacy and also enables products to reach the consumers intact.  “Paper” also contributes immensely to Health and Hygiene of people. There are innumerable application of Paper in our day to day lives.  No day passes for every human being in the world without using paper!

In order to spread the awareness of paper, the entire Paper Industry in India, including Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA), Indian Agro and Recycled Paper Manufacturers Association (IARPMA), Indian Recycled Paper Manufacturers Association (IRPMA), Indian Newsprint Manufacturers Association (INMA) alongwith  the apex body of all the paper traders across India - Federation of Paper Traders Associations’ of India (FPTA) met on 12th April 2017 and decided to celebrate 1st August every year as “Paper Day”

WHY 1ST AUGUST?

Papertells, earlier known as the Handmade Paper Institute, is India’s primary handmade paper factory based in Pune. Mahatma Gandhi had had been propagating the importance of Paper since his participation at the Haripur Congress. Mahatma Gandhi later persuaded Scientist K.B Joshi who went on to establish the Handmade Paper Institute which introduced the method of paper making out of waste materials.  This institute was inaugurated by Shri Jawaharlal Nehru on 1ST AUGUST 1940 and has since been supplying handmade papers across India

The unique features of the paper manufactured at this institute is making paper in the most eco friendly way. The manufacturing process implemented is also completely eco-friendly and does not pollute the environment in any way.  This institute produces paper which has a shelf life of 100 to 500 years!

Further,  "The paper for the first true copy of the Indian Constitution was written and printed on the paper manufactured at this unit”.

A curtain raiser for the “ Paper Day” was held on Nov 1st 2017 at Hall No 7, Conference Hall, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Dr.Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Union Minister of Science and Technology,Earth Sciences, Environmnet, Forest and Climate change.. Guests of Honor included   Shri.Vijay Goel, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs,Statistics & Programmee Implementation and Shri .Harshpati Singhania Vice Chairman and Managing Director JK Paper ltd., In this grand meeting it was declared that 1st August every year will be celebrated in India as Paper Day.

ACTIVITIES PLANNED ACROSS INDIA TO CELEBRATE PAPER DAY ON 1ST AUGUST

1.       Release of a Stamp under the “My Stamp”  scheme of the Postal Department.

2.       Drawing/Essay writing competitions for school children across India.  The common topics include My Garden ( for drawing competition), Paper and Its Uses & Paper spreads Literacy ( for essay writing competition)

3.       Release of First Day covers across India

4.       Common Posters highlighting the positives of Paper.  These posters will be displayed across India by the Traders, Paper Industry, Convertors and Consumers of Paper.

5.       A short film bursting the myths surrounding paper will be released.

6.       Notes books with Paper Day messages will be given away to deserving students across India.

7.       Paper Traders across India will sport a common T Shirt on 1st August.

Federation of Paper Traders’ Associations of India (FPTA) is the apex body of all the Paper Traders of India.  Established in the year 1959 on the advice of Late Lal Bahadur Sastri   and it is  headquartered at Mumbai.  FPTA has 35 Paper Trading Associations affiliated to it.  FPTA is one the most vibrant Trade Body in India taking up the causes of the Paper Industry and the Paper Trading Fraternity!
