The demand for decorative laminates is relatively high in developing countries such as India and China in the Asia Pacific region. One of the major reasons behind the growth of the market in these two countries is a rapid increase in the population accompanied by expansion of the economy that ultimately results in increase in per capita income. 

Exclusively and excitedly talking to The Pulp and Paper Times, Mr. Ajay Patel, Managing Director of Madhusudan Paper Mill said that “We are very much excited to have a specialty paper mill of 150 TPD (Tonnes per day) specially when the demand size of paper in the country is in good shape. Rapid growth in the residential sector in urban as well as semi-urban areas in India is expected to contribute significantly to overall market growth. Substantial growth in the services and manufacturing sector has led to strong growth in the GDP.”

“We are expected to start the commercial production of lamination paper in few days. We have invested around Rs. 40 to 50 Corer in the project manufacturing 150 to 180 GSM paper. The high end paper machine has been supplied by D.S. Engineers and pulp mill section is from Parason Machinery. The deckle of the machine is 4.3 meter and speed is designed at 300 m/m. Specialty paper will be based on recycle fibre to be sourced from out of India.” informed by Mr. Shyamal Das, Project Consultant to Madhusudan Paper Mill.

Its cost effectiveness and environment friendly nature are some of the factors which attracts more and more consumers. Attention towards decorating houses and Increasing preferences towards environment friendly products are also responsible for the growth of the market.

The new paper mill is having all the modern and critical components in place. Madhusudan Paper Mill would provide the employment to 150 people in the region. Company is looking for Domestic and export market for its product.

Specialty papers are defined as papers that are manufactured or subsequently converted to a specific usage. They are either manufactured separately, or normal paper is converted into specialty paper by coating it with a specialty paper and pulp chemicals, thus making it usable for a specific application. Another report estimates the global specialty paper market to grow at a CAGR of 3.28% over the period 2014-2019.

India's share in global paper demand is gradually growing as domestic demand is increasing at a steady pace while demand in the western nations is contracting The domestic demand in India grew from 9.3 million tonnes in FY08 to 15.3 million tonnes in FY16 at a CAGR of 6.4%. In spite of the sustained growth witnessed by the industry, the per capita paper consumption in India stands at a little over 13 kg which is well below the global average of 57 kg and significantly below 200 kg in North America.
