India’s largest paper plant ever has been confirmed to commence in Andhra Pradesh’s coastal area Ramayapatnam. The $3.5 billion project is being promoted by Indonesian pulp and paper giant Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Group, is expected to get all the clearance regarding the Investment from Centre Government by December 2019.

Earlier reported by The Pulp and Paper Times, Rs. 24,500 crore Greenfield project will have largest (5 million tonnes per annum) production capacity ever established in India by any paper giant. APP has identified 2,500 - acre land along the coast in Prakasam.

According to Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board CEO Mr. J Krishna Kishore “I understand the $3.5-billion investment is India’s biggest FDI in a single site, Greenfield project to date. It will create 4,000 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs, apart from benefiting 50,000 pulpwood farmers. We will be working with Invest India to ensure the project gets all the clearances, from the Centre by December 2019.”

APP will purchase some Hi-tech equipment from overseas suppliers and some from Indian suppliers, like dryers to save the import duty. As concern to raw material availability, APP would source the virgin pulp from Indonesia and waste paper from all over the world.

On the question of cheap import of paper from ASEAN countries to Indian Market due to low custom duty rate, do you find the viability of APP’s project on Indian soil? Mr. Suresh Kilam, Executive Director of APP confidently answered the question “We will stop exporting, won’t bring paper from Indonesia and China. We will make paper here (India) and sell it to Indian market as well export to other countries also. If we start plant here we stop importing the paper.”

“APP is known for setting up of State-of-art plant all over the world and we will follow this legacy in India also. Our plant will be one of the biggest paper plant in India, producing paper and paper boards of all grades except the newsprint segment. We are planning to manufacture, speciality paper, Writing-Printing, Kraft, Copier and Paperboards of all segments” said Mr. Suresh Kilam.
