West Coast Paper resumes paper making with strict safety guidelines

The positive news from the paper industry under lockdown status will bring a smile to thousands of people. A West Coast Paper mill has started the production at paper and duplex board division in Karnataka.

Karnataka Government notifies the Pulp and Paper Industry as the "Continuous Process Industrial Units" and they are exempted from the existing lockdown in order to prevent the damage to the plant/production machineries & to ensure industrial safety, with a condition that these units to operate with a bare minimal strength of staff/labor & shall follow the guidelines/instructions of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India and Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka with regard to the preventive measures to be taken for combating COVID-19.

According to well-placed sources, West Coast has partially started the paper production on two machines. “We have total six machines at Dandeli plant out of which production work starts on two machines of writing & printing. These two machines produce 200 TPD paper,” sources said.

“We are not receiving the raw material from the input supply chain and the transport of finished goods movement is still restricted in the state. The company has adequate raw material stock to run the machine with minimum staff,” sources concluded.

The company announced on 8 April 2020, that the Government of Karnataka has classified the pulp and paper industry as 'continuous process industrial units' and has exempted the industry from existing lockdown.

Accordingly, West Coast Paper has partially started production at Paper and Duplex Board Division, Dandeli with a bare minimal strength of staff labour with strict adherence to the safety guidelines with regard to the preventive measures taken for combating COVID-19.

The paper manufacturer had earlier initiated a lockdown in Dandeli on 25 March 2020. The company has also shut down its Telecom Cable Division, Mysore since 25 March 2020.
