The revival of Hindustan Newsprint Limited, a Central public sector unit that remained defunct for three years, as Kerala Paper Products Limited (KPPL) signals an alternative model of industrial development. By taking over the company, which had faced insolvency for long, through a resolution plan, the Kerala government rolled out a Revival and Restart Programme (RRP) configured in two phases for its revival and sustained operations.

KPPL has embarked on a transformative path that is shaping the future of Kerala state's paper industry. KPPL will focus on manufacturing high-quality packaging boards and packaging-grade paper.
In a post on LinkedIn, Mr. P Rajeeve, Kerala Minister for Industries, Law, and Coir, stated, "As we chart our course towards this goal, KPPL remains committed to sustainability and innovation. Our upcoming phases, with investments totaling ₹650 crores and ₹350 crores respectively, will focus on manufacturing high-quality packaging boards and packaging-grade paper. These endeavors underscore our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the paper industry while contributing to the economic growth of Kerala."

He informed that months ago, they commenced commercial production at KPPL, marking the beginning of a new era. "Today, I am proud to announce that KPPL has emerged as the leading supplier of newsprint for the majority of Malayalam newspapers, as well as gaining significant traction among national and state newspapers."

“This success is the result of our collective efforts and strategic investments. We have infused substantial funds into KPPL, with investments totaling ₹34.3 crores in the initial phase and ₹44.94 crores in subsequent phases. These investments have bolstered our production capabilities and set the stage for our ambitious vision: to achieve a turnover of ₹3,000 crores and position KPPL as a formidable organization,” he stated.
