No ‘Effluent treatment plant’ means Shut down for Kumbh Festival 2019

Ghaziabad, 7 January 2019, The Pulp and Paper Times:

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Uttarakhan and Uttar Pradesh Government whipped the Paper mills and other Industrial unit cluster operating in western Utter Pradesh to shut down till the ending of Kumbh Mela i.e 4 March 2019, if they don’t have effluent treatment Plant (ETP).

Recently releasing the order from Ghaziabad District Magistrate, Ms. Ritu Maheshwari said “There will be no discharge of effluents into the Ganga and its tributaries from grossly polluting units — distillery, sugar, pulp and paper and textile during the mela. These units drain untreated effluent and waste water in Kadrabad drain, which is connected with the Ganga."

“River Ganga enters in U.P. in District Bijnor and after passing through major districts Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahar, Aligarh, Kanpur Allahabad, Varanasi, Balia, it goes to Bihar onwards. The main action which is required in this segment is to take action in the identified 86 drains meeting into Ganga & its tributaries and for treating the drains as per their quality, recycling the treated water and discharging rest treated water into river as per the prescribed standards and maintaining E-flow in every stretch of the Ganga & its tributaries.” Say CPCB report

There has been total 69 paper industry in above districts, out them 13 paper mills are Agro waste based and 56 are recycle fibre based. According to the report 51 paper mills are operating in these districts with ETP, 10 unit are self closed and 8 mills have been closed by CPCB.
