Sri Andal Paper to set up India’s largest Container Board machine; 600 TPD is scheduled for the first half of 2021

Tamil Nadu | 24 March 2020 | The Pulp and Paper Times:

The Container-board segment in India is quite fragmented and largely utilizes Asian technology for board making. Sri Andal is aiming at producing high-quality container-board with tangible efficiency improvements to enhance its competitiveness.

Talking to The Pulp and Paper Times, Sri Andal Paper’s Managing Director, Mr. P. Subramaniam said “We have given an order to Valmet for supplying 4.8 meter wide deckle new line that will produce recycled liner, recycled fluting, and corrugated kraft (kraft top recycled liner) grades with the basis weight range of 70-300 g /m2. The design speed will be 750 m/min and an annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes.

“It was vitally important for us that the management-level relationship with Valmet was very good. Valmet has a strong reputation, and we trust that Valmet’s technology will help us to reach our high-quality targets,” says Mr. P. Subramaniam, Managing Director of Sri Andal.

The start-up of the machine is scheduled for the first half of 2021. The value of a project is typically around EUR 12-15 million.

“Valmet offered a suitable solution for achieving Sri Andal’s targets. With this technologically advanced project, we are setting our footprint in the Indian container board segment. We are looking forward to the successful start-up of this project, which will be a game-changer in the container-board segment,” says Varun Jain, Director of India Region at Valmet.

“The global recycled container-board market share is poised to observe gains at over 4.5% by 2025. Shifting consumer preference towards eco-friendly products may develop demand for recycled product. Recycled material improves stacking strength, compression and burst limit properties of these boards as it is manufactured using high powered compressing machines which may propel industry growth” sources said.

Valmet's delivery will include three OptiFlo Foudrinier headboxes for excellent profiles and good formation, an OptiPress Linear press section to achieve excellent end product properties, high dewatering capacity and good runnability, and an OptiSizer Film size press with a supply system. The delivery will also include a start-up package of spare parts and consumables, a Valmet DNA machine control system, Valmet IQ quality measurement system and Valmet Performance Center connectivity.

According to a latest industry report by Global Market Insights, the container-board market is set to cross USD 250-billion by 2025.

The momentous rise in the packaging industry due to its role in agriculture, pharmaceutical, FMCG and retail sector has surged demand for container boards as a feather-light packaging material which may foster product demand by 2025. It is utilized by the FMCG sector due to its printability and graphical characteristics, which improve the appearance of consumer durables thereby propelling container-board market share in a foreseeable time frame.
