The Pulp and Paper Times
Commissioning and Product Focus
M/s Om Sree Papertek (P) Ltd. has commissioned PM-2 with a specific focus on manufacturing smell free lighter GSM kraft paper. The new paper machine is designed to cater to the growing demand from the paper bag industry as well as the requirement for high-strength fluting media for corrugated boxes and wrapping paper. The Capacity of PM-2 is 6000 tons per month.
The product mix will cover 60 GSM to 120 GSM, with a strength range of 18 BF to 35 BF, catering to the requirements of corrugated packaging, wrapping paper and other allied applications. The machine has been specifically selected and configured to produce high-tear-factor kraft paper, making it particularly suitable for the rapidly growing paper bag market. The focus is to make the paper smell free to ensure the product acceptability in the market.
Technology and Machine Configuration
PM-2 is a combination of Chinese and European technology and equipment. The machine is equipped with a CD-controlled headbox from the reputed MCN, ensuring better profile control and consistency across the paper web.
The high-speed paper machine is of Chinese manufacture and is complemented by a high-speed rewinder and a steam condensate system. The combination of these technologies has been selected to achieve efficient production, improved paper quality and consistency across the targeted product range.
The ETP is a mix of Indian procurement and Chinese’s engineering suitable for making the paper smell free using the anaerobic digestion technology.
Growth Potential – Paper Bag Market
With the increasing emphasis on reducing single-use plastics, the shift towards paper bags and other paper-based alternatives is expected to gain significant momentum. The demand for paper bags and allied sustainable packaging products continues to grow, and we believe this segment has the potential to develop into a sizable and sustainable market.
PM-2 is strategically positioned to capitalize on this opportunity by producing high-strength, lightweight smell free kraft paper specifically suited for paper bags and other applications where strength-to-weight ratio is critical.
Current Kraft Paper Market Scenario
The current kraft paper market scenario remains challenging and volatile, particularly due to the sharp increase in long-fibre prices. The situation has been further impacted by the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East and its effect on global supply chains. The demand in their local market also continues to be strong.
We have witnessed an escalation of approximately US$50 per tonne in long-fibre prices originating from the US and around US$35 per tonne from the UK. Demand remains relatively firm, with fibre costs continuing to move upwards. As a result, kraft paper prices have increased by approximately Rs. 4–5 per kg across various regions.
At the same time, the cost of allied inputs such as chemicals, dyes and starch has collectively increased by approximately 15–25%, adding further pressure to manufacturing costs.
With the festival season approaching and demand expected to remain firm, we do not foresee any significant cooling-off in kraft paper prices in the near term.
