The Pulp and Paper Times
Nandi Papers Private Limited is entering a transformative phase of growth with the development of a state-of-the-art greenfield kraft paper mill near Chennai. The project is currently under implementation and is scheduled to commence commercial production by April 2028.
The upcoming facility will focus on the production of high BF Kraft paper above 30 and value-added paper products, with a planned installed capacity of 90,000 tons. The 3920-mm-wide (untrimmed sheet width on reel the basis weight range of 80 to 300 g /m2. The mill is being designed with modern machinery, advanced automation systems, and energy-efficient technologies to ensure high productivity, consistent product quality, and sustainable operations.
In an interaction with Pulp and Paper Times, Mr. J. Ramesh Chowdary, Chairman and Managing Director of Nandi Papers, shared insights into the vision and long-term strategy behind the project.
“Our vision is to build a modern and efficient paper mill equipped with advanced global technology. By combining strategic location advantages with world-class machinery and automation, we aim to deliver high-quality kraft paper products while maintaining operational excellence and sustainability.”
“Our vision is to build a technologically advanced and globally competitive paper manufacturing facility in India.” Mr. J. Ramesh Chowdary said.
Nandi Paper Industries has appointed M/s Aquatherm Engineering Consultants (India) Pvt. Ltd. to provide detailed engineering consultancy services for the utility section of its project.
In a separate development, C2C Consultancy has been awarded the detailed engineering consultancy contract for the project's balance of plant facilities. The scope of work covers Stock Preparation, Paper Machine, Winder, and Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP).
The appointments mark the allocation of key engineering consultancy responsibilities across the utility and core process sections of the project.
Strategic Location Advantage
A major strength of the project lies in its strategic proximity to a major port near Chennai, which will enable efficient logistics and faster movement of both raw materials and finished products. The location will significantly reduce handling time and transportation costs, providing a competitive advantage in domestic and export markets.
Collaboration with Global Technology Leaders
To achieve world-class manufacturing standards, Nandi Papers has partnered with leading international technology providers for key process systems.
The OCC line, approach flow system, and white top line will be supplied by ANDRITZ – International Technology Group, one of the most respected global suppliers of pulp and paper technologies.
Key machinery and systems will be sourced from reputed international manufacturers, including:
• ST Macchine SpA, Italy – Headbox system
• IBS – Dewatering ceramic tops and EVA vacuum control system
• Kadant Johnson Europe B.V. – Steam and condensate system
• ADPAP, Finland – Starch preparation system
• Shandong Tianrui Maglev Pump, China – High-efficiency maglev vacuum pumps
Advanced Automation and Process Control
To enhance operational efficiency and ensure consistent product quality, the mill will incorporate advanced DCS (Distributed Control System) and QCS (Quality Control System). These systems will enable real-time process monitoring, precise quality control, and improved production stability.
High-Performance Paper Machine Components
The rewinder will be supplied by Globe Radio Private Limited, while the drying cylinders and paper machine hood will be sourced from reputed manufacturers in China.
The wire section (3-wire configuration), press section, dryer section, and other critical paper machine components will be supplied by established machinery manufacturers to ensure reliable and high-performance operation.
Commitment to Sustainable Operations
The Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), boiler system, and turbine generator (TG) are currently under discussion with leading suppliers and will be finalised shortly. These systems will play a key role in ensuring efficient energy utilisation and environmentally responsible operations.
Strengthening the Kraft Paper Segment
With a combination of advanced technology, global partnerships, and a strategically located facility, Nandi Papers aims to establish a modern and efficient paper manufacturing operation that will cater to the rapidly growing high-quality packaging paper. The demand for better grades of container board is increasing due to the increasing quality requirements, upgradation of specifications by packaging buyers and the expected geographical spread in demand for packaging by FMCG, e-commerce, and durable goods manufacturers. We expect a growth rate of high BF Kraft of 7 to 8 % growth per year. Nandi Paper aims to develop high-quality Kraft Papers and Plaster boards and establish itself well in the local market, and plan for exports at a later stage.
The upcoming project reflects the company’s long-term commitment to strengthening its presence in the kraft paper and packaging board segment, while contributing to the development of the Indian paper industry.
