Paper and Packaging Board Market May Face Cost Pressures Through March 2027; FPTA Advises Traders

T. Kishan Singh, President of the Federation of Paper Traders Associations (FPTA), has urged paper traders to plan inventories prudently, reconfirm prices and material availability with mills, and exercise caution while accepting long-term orders amid rising costs and market uncertainties.

The paper and packaging board industry is facing considerable challenges due to geopolitical tensions, coal availability constraints, rising energy costs and sharply increased international freight charges, according to T. Kishan Singh, President of the Federation of Paper Traders Associations (FPTA).

In his message to the paper trading fraternity dated October 17, 2026, Singh highlighted the growing cost pressures affecting the industry, noting that rising Brent crude prices are further increasing transportation and production costs. Recent mill price revision announcements reflect these mounting pressures, while inventory levels at several mills appear to be declining, making advance planning increasingly important for traders.

Looking ahead, Singh indicated that the paper and packaging board market could continue to experience cost pressures in the coming months, potentially extending through March 2027. However, future price movements will depend on developments in raw material availability, energy costs, international freight, geopolitical conditions, and the prevailing demand-supply balance.

Against this backdrop, Singh advised traders to remain vigilant and review market developments regularly before committing to purchases or sales. He emphasised the importance of planning inventory requirements well in advance and reconfirming prices, material availability and delivery schedules with the concerned mills before making commitments to customers.

He also urged traders to exercise caution while quoting prices and accepting long-term orders, particularly amid continued uncertainty over costs and supplies. Maintaining close communication with mills and fellow traders, he said, would help the trading community stay informed about changing market conditions and make better business decisions.

With notebook manufacturers and other seasonal units beginning preparations for the upcoming season, Singh called on traders to plan carefully, communicate responsibly and work collectively to ensure a smooth business cycle.

Concluding his message on the occasion of Dussehra and Vijayadashami, Singh encouraged the paper trading fraternity to carry forward the festive spirit and positive outlook into the 2027 business season, expressing hope for a prosperous and successful period for the industry.
