Govt. curbs paper consumption: No Calendars, No Diaries, only Digital Format
New Delhi | 3rd September 2020 |The Pulp and Paper Times:
The Union government on Wednesday asked all ministries and departments to stop printing wall calendars, desktop calendars, diaries and greeting cards in their physical forms in a bid to encourage usage of digital format.
All calendars, diaries, schedulers, and similar other materials, which were earlier printed in physical format, will now be done digitally by the ministries, government departments, PSUs, and the state-owned lenders said the finance ministry. It has been suggested to adopt innovative means to use digital or online methods due to the prevailing circumstances in which the world is increasingly moving towards adopting digital force-multipliers for productivity.

“While concern about strained government finances is valid, this step will not even be a drop in the ocean. But, it will impact printers, paper mills and traders (also farmers supplying pulpwood) already reeling from severe demand compression due to closure of schools, educational institutes, offices,†says Mr. Rohit Pandit, Secretary General of Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA) on the official social media platform.
“This step of Indian govt is totally absurd. Mostly, calendars and dairies are given as a gift to enhance business with customers. It was a kind gesture through which we could remember the customers or someone special who could help us. Paper traders and mills will have to face another bearish phase due to drop in demand drastically,†said Mr. Ambarish Bagri, who deals in paper trade business.
There would be no activity towards printing of wall calendars, desktop calendars, diaries and other such materials for use in the coming year by any ministry, department, public sector companies, state-run banks and all other organs of the government, the finance ministry said in a statement.
The department of expenditure said the decision has been taken as “the world is increasingly moving towards adopting digital force multipliers for productivity and given the fact that using technological innovations for planning, scheduling and forecasting is known to be economical, efficient and effectiveâ€.
