A Decade of Purpose and Perspective: For ten years, we have not just reported the paper industry—we have given it a voice
The Pulp and Paper Times

Editorial
Dear Friends,

It is with immense pride and quiet satisfaction that we mark a significant milestone—the completion of ten years of The Pulp and Paper Times. What feels, in retrospect, like the blink of an eye has, in reality, been a decade of relentless pursuit of truth, relevance, and meaningful industry engagement.

When we embarked on this journey in April 2016, launching The Pulp and Paper Times in a newspaper format, our intent was both clear and uncompromising—to uphold the highest standards of journalistic ethics while addressing a visible gap in industry-focused reporting. Despite the presence of several reputed publications, there existed a void in consistent, incisive, and truly representative industry news. We set out to bridge that gap with purpose and conviction.

From the very beginning, our editorial philosophy has been rooted in depth, credibility, and relevance. The pulp and paper industry, dynamic and often underrepresented, has faced numerous structural and cyclical challenges—ranging from paper imports and fiber scarcity to technological transformation and evolving regulatory frameworks. These were not issues that could be addressed through cursory mentions or fragmented commentary; they demanded sustained attention, informed dialogue, and a strong, collective industry voice.

The Pulp and Paper Times became that voice.

Our commitment was tested—and ultimately strengthened—during one of the most challenging periods in recent history. The onset of COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdowns brought unprecedented disruption to the global and domestic supply chains. The paper industry was no exception. Imports of recovered fiber came to a halt, market sentiments turned uncertain, and stakeholders across the value chain—paper mills, traders, converters, and end-users—found themselves navigating an environment defined by ambiguity.

In that moment of uncertainty, when many industry publications fell silent or limited their engagement, The Pulp and Paper Times chose to lean in. We intensified our efforts—engaging deeply with industry veterans, mill owners, association leaders, and domain experts—to bring forth clarity, context, and continuity. Our coverage during the COVID period was not only extensive but also purposeful, aimed at decoding the complexities of the moment and delivering actionable insights.

We have always believed that while news generation is essential, the true challenge lies in its effective dissemination. Recognizing this early, we embraced emerging communication channels to ensure that our reporting reached where it mattered most. Our WhatsApp-based news network became a pioneering initiative—connecting thousands of industry professionals across segments and geographies. This direct, real-time engagement allowed us to remain not just accessible, but indispensable—often just a message away from the industry’s key decision-makers.

Over the years, our editorial canvas has expanded, yet remained sharply focused on issues of consequence. We have consistently tracked and analyzed pivotal developments such as the waste paper crisis, Red Sea disruptions, overcapacity in the kraft segment, demand-supply imbalances, export slowdowns, and the surge in imports. We have reported extensively on global regulatory frameworks, including the European Union’s Waste Shipment Regulation (WSR) and the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), as well as domestic policy shifts like GST 2.0.

We have documented the emergence of molded fiber products, evolving packaging innovations in Europe, margin pressures within mills, and structural concerns such as wood scarcity. Each of these topics has been approached with the intent not merely to inform, but to interpret and contextualize for our readers.

Beyond reporting, we have also sought to provoke thought and encourage strategic discourse within the industry. One such initiative has been the concept of “ONE Machine, ONE Grade, One Region.” Introduced at a time of declining demand and increasing fragmentation, this idea aimed to stimulate dialogue around capacity optimization and operational efficiency. While still evolving, it reflects our belief that a publication must not only mirror the industry but also contribute to shaping its future direction.

Our engagement has not been confined to the private sector alone. We have actively built bridges with government institutions, facilitating meaningful conversations with policymakers, scientists, and institutional leaders. In parallel, our interactions with leading research and rating agencies such as ICRA, CRISIL, Fastmarkets, TTOBMA, and PricewaterhouseCoopers have enriched our content with data-driven insights, forward-looking analysis, and global perspectives.

Our presence at international exhibitions and forums has further reinforced the importance of credible journalism. Time and again, we have witnessed industry leaders and professionals turn to The Pulp and Paper Times as a trusted source—often recalling our platform as their first point of reference for timely and reliable updates.

At the heart of our journey lies an unwavering belief: that original, authentic news is the rightful expectation of every reader. In an era where content repetition is commonplace, we have consciously resisted the temptation of convenience. We view redundancy not merely as a lapse in quality, but as a disservice to the reader. For us, a news magazine is not a promotional brochure—it is a vital input, a decision-enabling resource for an informed and discerning subscriber.

Today, The Pulp and Paper Times stands as one of the most widely read publications within the Indian paper industry. Our reach extends across a vibrant and engaged community, with a distinctive presence on digital platforms. Our WhatsApp ecosystem alone connects approximately 27,500 professionals through multiple segments—including dedicated news groups, a job channel, a paper trading platform, and our thoughtfully curated channel, Paper Beyond Headlines — Insightful & Softer Stories That Matter. Across all platforms, our growing community now exceeds 58,000 followers.

Equally integral to our journey are our advertisers—whose trust and partnership have enabled us to scale and innovate. We firmly believe that every investment made by an advertiser must translate into tangible value. Guided by this principle, we have reimagined traditional advertising approaches—integrating brand visibility seamlessly within high-traffic editorial environments and leveraging digital platforms to deliver sustained and meaningful engagement.

As we look back on ten years, we do so with gratitude and humility. And as we look ahead, we do so with renewed purpose. The industry stands at the cusp of transformation—driven by sustainability imperatives, technological innovation, and shifting global dynamics. In this evolving landscape, our role becomes even more critical.

We remain committed—to integrity in journalism, to depth in reporting, and to serving as a credible, forward-looking voice for the pulp and paper industry.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our readers, subscribers, advertisers, and well-wishers for their continued trust and support. Your belief in our work has been the foundation of our journey.

The next decade awaits—with greater responsibility, deeper insight, and an even stronger resolve.
